The cost of just being a living being.


A grown poor Nigerian human bent on surviving.

On making ends meet without another being the meat

On attempting to strive above the strife,

Hustling legally, 

It's not easy. 


Odiro easy the times you have to show up against all odds. 

To cheer up your neighbor while tears still trickle down your own eyes.

To pick up your bag, your pen, your tools,

To work,

When all you want to do is just sit down and cry. 


Odiro easy that afa gi bu Ujunwa,

Yet you are only full but in grasia of hunger,

Of sizzling lack and of heart-wrenching want.


Odiro easy na ina aya na-aya nke ina aya, ebe gi n'ekwe.

Hey sis, do you know your brother is sick? 

Ka imaputa isi ebekwa ozo, 

Ha! Imakwa na-ahu adiro mpa gi.


And so in this way your life keep going,

Ina adoni,

Hoping that one day the story would change,

It's not easy, I tell you! 


It's not easy. 

The times you have to wake up to cry,

To call upon your God and ask where you went wrong...


But do we give up? 



Osiri ike. It's truly truly hard. 


Yet, of what help do giving up render after you have come this far? 

What happens to the years already wasted?

It's in the little things. The way you ask "are you well?"  With the look of concern on your face When my face seem clouded with worry.  The way you reach out to catch me, And look into my face without saying a word, When I misplace my step and want to fall.  The way you hold me, Gently on the shoulders to say, "Kedu?"  When I give you a soft nudge  On your chest or tummy, As a way of greeting.  Ayee, It's in all the little nothings that are bigger all things.   Today, I was going to make a post whose subject matter would have bothered on, “choose to be happy no matter what life throws at you (in extension, choose to succeed against all odds).”  But then, it occurred to me, I could only think this way because I have the privilege of choosing. What about the people who sincerely can’t choose? Like the young lady I saw one day on my way to Ebenebe, whose whole mouth is painfully blocked by a giant,malignant, tumour? Or the people permanently made unaware of anything else asides the pain that comes from the ailment of body/life which they suffer? Pain is in grades.
